Fur trade contract, 1688 Aug. 1-2.

A fur trade contract (in French) binding a number of men into the service of French trader and diplomat Nicolas Perrot (1643-1717) for the coming season's work in the western Great Lakes region. It was on the trip arranged in the document that Perrot, in the spring of 1689, staged a ceremony at Fort St. Antoine (south of Maiden Rock on the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin) in which he 'took possession' of the adjacent country for the French.

Perrot was a fur trader, voyageur, and envoy to Native Americans, he came to the new world as an agent to the French missionaries. His knowledge and influence with the Indians was often used by the French government in dealing with the tribes of the old Northwest.
